The conflicting online fundraisers for Ferguson make a perfect illustration of America’s identity debate

Article

What do you think of the crowd-sourcing used in support of Darren Wilson? Do you think it should be allowed at all? Does Wilson deserve/need the money?

I think that money for any cause should be allowed as long as it's within the boundaries of morality. In this case it is up to a person to decide which side they are in support of. What I disagree with is that Wilson has no use for the money. He is not paying legal fees of any kind, or is left without a job. He is on paid leave. I think in this case it is the fault of the supporters for not doing their research and throwing money at someone who does not need it. Wilson now has half a million dollars for killing a boy. Regardless of whether it is justified or not, he should not be getting paid for ending a life. The protests and the reactions are very reminiscent of the civil rights movement and puts it into perspective. Especially, the police reactions to the protests.

  1. Personally, I agree that he should not be getting money for murdering someone. That sends the wrong message, specifically from those who are telling him that he was just doing his job. I'm pretty sure his job was not to shoot a young, unarmed man 6 times, which seems excessive. I think that no one can tell anyone else what to do with their money, but his supporters don't seem to have a good reason for doing this especially since, as you mentioned, he is on paid leave.

  2. I agree that money should not be spent or wasted on Police Officers shooting a certain "criminal". They are getting pay checks from our tax dollars, which we pay for our own protection. Although the officer may have thought he was being attacked, I do not think that the officer should have used an armed weapon to put his suspect down. Maybe even a tazer would have worked or even pepper spray, because the use of an armed weapon is only used with the concept of "shoot to kill" which I do not feel it is entirely fair and safe without trully knowing the intentions from the other side.

  3. To be completely honest, I think that Wilson deserves a certain amount of money to cover the psychological aspect of this. Regardless of whether he killed Michael Brown in cold blood or not, ending another human being's life is very upsetting to the killer. Tons of soldiers come back from wars after killing armed opponents who were going to kill them if they didn't shoot and are still diagnosed with PTSD. The added fact that he is being publicly shamed by many Americans and his name is in headlines all over the world has got to be seriously damaging his psyche. All of the controversy aside, he does deserve compensation for his suffering.

  4. From what I've read, I do believe that it matters somewhat where the money goes and who the money goes to. A man shooting an unarmed civilian should not get that much money compared to the victim of the incident. Though, I do feel as though people are just giving their money away to a cause even though they do not know exactly what the cause is for, or have very little knowledge on the cause that they are donating for. People having differing views on what is right and wrong, and that is something you cannot really change. Some people think that the officer was doing his job, while others believe that he was being too brutal. I have no opinion on the subject as of now, but I do believe that Wilson should not be getting too much money, as he is on paid leave, which should be enough already. Really, all the crowdfunding done with these groups shows what moral values and political ideologies each of these groups have, and none of them are inherently wrong, per se. You cannot really say who is right or wrong in this situation considering that both of these sides put up valid arguments as to why their side is correct, and at that point, it is all your choice to decide which side to root for.

  5. In all honesty I agree that people are entitled to pick there own side. I also agree with Gavin that when you kill someone it takes out a part of your mind and stays with for the rest of your life,Reguardless of weather or not it was justified which I don't think it was in our own mind we all have our own form of justice. And sometimes our own justice gets in the way and clouds our better judgement never the less where you come down on this is your opinion not mine.

  6. I agree with Jacob that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but i also agree with Joseph that the killer should not be supported. In all honesty the people can support who they want and we have no control over that. I see the officer as a killer, but not everyone can have the same point of view.
