Scottish independence: Salmond says Scotland is 'on cusp of making history'

Scottish Independence Article

Independence? Does this not sound familiar? Scottland, right now, is trying to gain its independence from the United Kingdom, just like how the US tried to gain their own independence from England. Only less violent. I find this historical process very intresting as their are two outcomes, and we will not know which one until one outcome is decided, which will be exciting to witness in our lifetime. (IMPORTANT: a referendum is a political question that is answered by a general vote.)

  2. This does seem very familiar to the US situation except for the fact that they are taking place in totally different decades. I think that there efforts to remain non-violent stand a good chance since many countries have succeeded in gaining their independance from England without violence. When the US gained their independence from England, it lead to the revolutionary war and I doubt this will happen with Scotland. I also believe that England won't put up to much resistence and will allow them to separate peacefully since it is something they have done in the past.

    1. A very insightful analysis for the difference in events but similar motives.

  3. I think this case is very interesting, seeing that the UK has been functioning so strongly in the past decades. I do understand Scotland's need for independence, and support them in their case if that is their wish. However, it creates a lot of interesting issues, such as citizenship for expatriates, whether they will be a part of the EU and its military. I agree with Lorraine that I think it is amazing and the best chance Scotland has to have a peaceful independence. It seems really promising so far.

    1. I hope that this declaration for independence goes smoothly too, however; the voting for independence has came to 50% saying "no" and 45% saying "yes", while the other 5% does not know. Hopefully the remaining who do not know agree for independence as that would be an intresting thing to see in our life time.
