I think that the fact that the senator had the courage to admit to the whole world that he is gay shows how strong a leader he is. This is usually an announcement that people are very afraid of making. By this senator doing so, I think he builds more trust because he is admitting a big secret, which makes me believe that he is a great person to trust on the government because he is already telling us the truth. Not just any truth, but a very important and personal truth. By starting with this, I trust that he is a real person, He is like us, he has a secret. And rarely do you hear that a man a part of the government is gay, and we have many gays, bisexuals, and lesbians in our community. The senator is one of us, he is not just someone more powerful, he is our representative, our voice.

'I'm gay. Get over it,' Pennsylvania senator casually comes out

I defiantly agree with Bianca because she makes a great point that he was very brave in telling the world a pretty big secret that many people are scared to say in front of very close family and very close friends. Like she said, that fact that he already told everyone is very brave and makes him seem like a good leader because is isn't afraid to tell it how it is. This was people can see that he is willing to help people and isn't afraid to tell us things that could be happening and not hide anything.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bianca as well. Some people treat gay people differently and bully them. Announcing this sexually orientation is something that we should respect because it is something personal. He was very brave and confident about telling people publicly and that is a reason we should look up on Senator Ferlo. His announcement will also help our world become more equal. As a leader, I also trust that he will be honest with us and make the decisions because of his decision to come out. He is not ashamed of who he is and I believe that this is a step toward making the US more equal.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I agree that he is a brave man for coming out while knowing he would be criticized a great amount, I have to disagree that him being gay makes him any more trusting. This senator being gay is something he is. Would we make an article about a woman senator? or a black senator? No we would not. To reach true equality there needs to not be any fuss about someone coming out when it is a topic that is not very important. Yes he is brave for coming out, but it does not truly mean anything especially since the article said he came out "casually".
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you -- being of a different sexual orientation from someone else does not make you any more trustworthy than you were before. It does take courage to tell people something like this, but he's not lying if he's not telling people he's gay. And while it makes me happy to see someone representing and advocating for our rights as a group of people who didn't have many before, no one is under any obligation to tell anyone else their sexual orientation. Someone who is straight is no more or less trustworthy than someone of a different orientation if you base that judgement solely on their orientation.
DeleteIt's very true. This senator has made an action which not many people have the courage to do. His sense of honesty makes people who are represented by him, have more trust in him. I believe this is a major step in our government that portrays this message that the time for hatred is over. An important position in our government's layout being gay really encourages those who are scared of telling the truth about their sexual desires to come out of their shells. It makes people to have this thinking that they are not just the only ones who think this way, and it makes them to take actions for their rights.

ReplyDeleteI think this senator foreshadows the attitude of the future as we move farther away from our past views of gays. Ones sexual orientation does not affect their decision making, in the same way that ones gender does not. This fact does not make him any more or less credible, and in some years I believe that a story like this will hardly be news.
ReplyDeleteI believe in the Senators decision to make a public announcement of his sexuality. Many government officials are very hesitant to admit or promote homosexuality for fear of judgment and losing votes. The senator being as courageous as he is shows the future and current generation to become more accepting towards this idea. The senator claims, "I'm gay, get over it" nonchalantly because he believes homosexuality is nothing to be ashamed or afraid of. He believes people need to learn to be more accepting towards this life style and move past the barrier of discrimination.
ReplyDeleteComing out makes you brave, but that doesn't automatically tie to being a leader. I admire Senator Ferlo for his nonchalant attitude and openness of the matter. He is a brave man with a strong heart. He also should be admired for facing the task at hand: the hate crime case he was attending to. Its a great reflection of the kind of person he is.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bianca 100 percent. There are a lot of controversy about being gay and if it's acceptable so for him to come out saying that he is gay, takes so much pride and courage. A lot of people discriminate and bully gays. Even though he is gay, he is a strong senator and doing is job very well. Never minding the stereotypes. He shows that there is hope for this country accepting gays how they are.
ReplyDeleteThis article is very good, it shows the people of america that theres nothing to be ashamed of that even men in politics can come out and soc an anyone else, this is a very private matter that he felt comfortable telling the world I agree with bianca because it takes courage and real trust to admit something like that
ReplyDeleteI do believe this man is courageous for doing a thing like this, but I believe that this shouldn't impact his position in the government. Straight or Gay, I believe a leader should be judged on the way he leads, not his sexual preference or any of his personal secrets. I don't believe we should trust one person more than another just because he admitted to being gay.
