Adrian Peterson Barred as Vikings Reverse Course
Due to public pressure, Adrian Peterson will not play this Sunday against the Saints. Peterson was accused to have beaten his son. This event and the earlier Ray Rice punching his wife scandal has sparked a big debate recently. Several women's groups and fans have criticized the fact that the Vikings were allowing him to play. Although Peterson most likely committed the crime, the decision was already made to let him play. An important piece of the Bill of Rights is that everyone is "innocent until proven guilty". The Vikings organization is ignoring this law by taking their original decision back from letting Peterson play. Do you think he should play? Should the "innocent until proven guilty" law apply here? Do you think it was the right decision for the Vikings organization to bar him from games and practices until his issue is dealt with?

I think that the Viking's organization made the right decision in not allowing Peterson to play this Sunday and let the hearing happen before any further punishment occurs. My only argument is that, other people can not tell someone how to punish their child. Peterson may have taken things a little to far with hitting the child with a twig, but what they did not tell us is what the child did in order to be spanked with the twig. The child could have done something completely obscene and could have deserved the punishment, or it could have been completely not deserving, we will just ave to wait and see what the court rules.
ReplyDeletethe media is blowing his personal life up because he is one of the parents who punish their child if the child does somthing wrong. 40 years ago this would not have even been a crime instead it would be looked at as a parent showing their kid that they messed up.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Viking's organization could've gone both ways with this. It was a good idea to not let Peterson play this Sunday, but there is no reason to tell everyone his personal life or what he's going through. Originally, parents were allowed to hit their kids for their own enjoyment (God forbid) but was mostly for punishment such as a spanking, however now it is frowned upon. I feel like there could've been a different solution but this one works just as well.

ReplyDeleteI think that Peterson should not be punished for disciplining his child. Many people discipline their children in different ways, as long as he isn't causing horrible injury's where an ill-attention is present, then I think it should be okay. I agree with David, I think that the media has a tendency of going blowing things over the top. Sure Peterson, did hit his child, but what the media doesn't tell are facts such as Peterson was disciplined the same way he is disciplining his children. Many times we are influenced by our elders, specifically, our parents; and things they do we generally reflect on us as we get older. Although Peterson does not deserve this suspension, I do believe that someone should go to him and tell him that what he did might of been allowed when he was a child, is not acceptable in the society we will in now. I also believe the only reason the NFL and the Vikings suspended Peterson was because they were losing money by playing him, since sponsorship did not want to be affiliated with an alleged child abuser.
ReplyDeleteEven though I am a huge sports lover, I would have to agree with Gabe because it is just wrong that you should hit your kid like he did. If normal people were to hit their kid, they could go to jail but the only reason he didn't get in big time trouble is because he is an athlete and a big time football player that is famous and a big part of the Vikings organization. All in all i think the made the wrong decision.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tanner and Gabe since it is a wrong way of disciplining your child. But I do not think the the Bill of Rights apply to this since it was obviously him and is obviously guilty. Also as far as I know Adrian decided that he would take a break in football since he saw that he needed to fix his family issues. Another thing I would point out is that there has been a lot of violence in the NFL organization lately. I feel that they need to make it even more clear to the players that any violent act is not tolerated. I say this because Ray Rice who was recently indefinitely suspended from the NFL might be able to come back to the even though he knocked out his wife. So I agree with the vikings decision to follow up with suspension of Adrian after he said he was going to work his problems out and take some time off since that might give Adrian some time to think about how he is going to move forward with his family and his career.
ReplyDeleteOk, no look there is really no need to blow this out of proportion my boy Adrian Peterson may have caused an injury that was never and I quote "intended" by Adrian Peterson himself but we have to look at the big picture and that's the fact that everyone overlooks and automatically jump the gun and say that it's plain old abuse. Well that's wrong all he was trying to do was discipline his son the he and many other people were disciplined. I mean without discipline this world would be hectic, I know there are other ways to handle the situation but man he handled the situation the way he saw fit and I am going to stay firm with my point.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tanner when he said that Adrian did not get in big trouble for child abuse because he is an important athlete for the Vikings and the NFL. But we can not jump to conclusions because he might have also just been a father who was trying to discipline his child, also the article and the NFL never really mentioned how extreme the abuse was and why Adrian was abusing his child.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tanner when he said Adrian Peterson did not get punished because he is an important athlete. I believe he should be punished but then again people pay a lot of money to see him play. I agree with both sides, however I believe he should be allowed to play until he is proven guilty. In conclusion, I believe it is okay to hit your child, but not beat him up.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of things to take into consideration in this situation. The most important is that the Vikings as a team is not part of the government. They are a business, and will act accordingly. If they feel that Peterson being on the team will negatively affect them, they can decide whether they want him off of the team, regardless of whether he has been found guilty. The second important point has to do with the abuse itself. Study after study has shown that even something as innocent as spanking, has negative effects, and is generally ineffective it disciplining the child. Children will not avoid making mistakes because they know they're wrong, but because they do not want to experience physical pain. In conclusion, it is the teams decision whether he continues to play, and he should be held accountable if it is true that he inflicted the damage to his child.
ReplyDeleteAdrian Peterson did not get punished because he is an extraordinary athlete that is very important to the Vikings. If this was another player from the team, that player would of got fired on the spot. He should of been punished and should of got rid of his contract. But, they should do this when he is found guilty in court.
