Over 48 million Americans live in poverty

Article Link

When people hear "The United States of America" they think of a great opportunity for anyone who can get into America. That may have been the case many years ago but today this is not the case. Over 48 million of the people in America live in poverty. I think that this is too many people that live in poverty for us to feel comfortable so we now need to take action and help save some of these people. Is this something the United States needs to focus on even with all of these other complications coming up right now? Or should the government put this aside and tend to other issues that are happening right now? Is there even a way for people to help this cause enough to make a difference because so many people are going into poverty at such a high rate?

  1. I believe it is important for the government to tend to the poor's needs. If these people were employed they could contribute to the US economy. 48 million people would make a huge impact. Also with the amount of money the government spends on frivolous things and the huge amount they spend on the military, I think they could spare some for the poor.

  2. I definitely think that saving people from poverty should be a priority. Why do we need to have our streets paved every 2 years when that money could go to helping someone get off the street? Like Alejandro said, the government spends so much money on aspects that have much less value than improving the life of a human being. It's almost selfish that they would decide to not spend their money on the people - aren't we the ones that should be helping each other?

  3. I believe that the government should do something about this. The US govt spends too much money on other things when they cant see that our own country is in need of help. Yes its good that we are helping our foreign neighbors but we should have priorities for ourselves first. We should be looking for ways to get these people off the streets. We should be looking for opportunities for them. We may not believe that the toll of poverty is that high but that is only because we are blind to it. We have to open our eyes and really see what is going on in the US

  4. I agree, the government should prioritize helping the poor because it is obviously a really big problem in our country and it isn't addressed as well as it should be. Like everyone else said, our government wastes money on things that aren't really necessary while doing little to help people in need.

  5. To be realistic, you cannot end poverty forever in any country. But, there are many things the government can do to reduce the number of people in poverty. The government should put effort and money into helping homeless people find jobs and have a roof over their heads. Even though the government has a lot of duties to do, I am sure they have the time and the money to help the people. I agree with Kara, it is a big problem but it is not addressed as well as it should be.

  6. I think the only thing the government needs to do is house, feed and clothe homeless people. The people living "in poverty" are those without jobs living on welfare. There is no threat to their health due to this, so they should not be a priority. I agree that it is a major problem, but there are more pressing issues the government needs to address at the moment.

  7. The government should be doing something about the rising homeless epidemic, for sure. More and more people are being put out on the streets, and this is not good for the health of the homeless, and it could potentially harm the health of US citizens. I do agree with Gavin in the fact that the government can't do much in terms of helping people in poverty besides giving them welfare, which in itself is a big enough help. I also agree with Aileen and her statement about how poverty can never be ended. In any country with a capitalist style of economy, there will always be those in the lower class who cannot support themselves as well as other people.

  8. I agree with many of the things already stated on this post. Yes, the number of people in poverty IS increasing, but as Gavin stated, it is not a concern that needs to be prioritized. Poverty is bad, but other things going on inside the US currently such as the Ebola epidemic and violence such as the incident in Ferguson that bring immediate death should be more focused on. Although the government is concentrating on the matters, I feel that it is investing too much time and money into outside matters to actually take care of the internal concerns.

  9. That is too huge of an amount to just ignore. I feel that the government needs to create more organizations focused on supporting these people. Such as suggesting them to jobs that pay well enough and are easy to get. This would help them earn enough money to support themselves and their families. There should also be a deal such as the government loaning them money at certain periods of time, and they pay the government back by completing tasks given by the government. My point being that theses people in poverty need more support.

  10. I agree with everyone else, the government should help those people who are poor going through that its really difficult we never know if they have eaten something. The government wastes money on things that are not necessary in the moment instead of paying for all those thing they should help out all the poor people out there that's my opinion.

  11. I believe that it is really hard to end poverty in any country, but I also believe poverty isn't something we can just ignore. Poverty can really take a toll on any country's economy. 48 million is a big number, and I do not believe that it can be taken care of now, but I do believe that the government can make small steps to make this number gradually go down. I think the most effective thing the government do is spread awareness because I'm sure people know that much of the population lives in poverty, but I do not think some people know to what extent.

  12. There will always be a population that is almost close enough to hopeless as they use any money they can ponder on drugs. There is no savior for them unless they can break their addiction. I do think there were people that didn't have much choice in being able to change the fact of their inability to support themselves and these are the people in my opinion, that we need to focus. Donating to a cause that takes money in and divides it equally while distributing it to a small unfortunate community could be a good start. So we do need to start helping generations with poverty.

  13. I think regardless, of what people or the U.S does it'll be hard to get rid of poverty. Thats just not something that'll take 1-2 months or years, it'll take much more time than that. I think that'll it'll be hard to find a solution on how to end poverty. Also i don't think they should leave it to the side but first take care of the more important things that are currently going on.

  14. I feel that the United States should try to help the 48 million people in poverty. They should try to push them in the right direction in order to make a better life for themselves. However, this should not be the main focus of the country. There are many other issues going on, like global warming, but the United States should not flat out ignore the issue of poverty.

  15. I feel that the US should al least try and help poverty in our country. Especially the veterans because 1/3 of poor people are veterans. I don't think homeless and food shelters are not enough to make poor people push them in the right direction.
