Terminally Ill Brittany Maynard Thanks Those Supporting Her 'Death with Dignity'

http://www.people.com/article/brittany-maynard-death-with-dignity-update

It is a sad idea to think about, but everyone dies. For some people death is a way to remember the amazing life that they lived, but for some death is a burden and is anticipated to end pain and suffering. For people like Brittany Maynard death is a burden, most 29 year old women are thinking about marriage and the life ahead of them, not wanting to die. Mrs.Maynard is diagnosed with stage 4 gliobastoma which is a rare type of cancer that causes tumors in the brain. This is known as a terminal illness, which makes her eligible of the option of physician assisted suicide, which is where the patient chooses death and end their own life with the help of a doctor.  Physician assisted suicide has been a nationwide debate for very long and is only legal in a few states, and stirs up many mixed feelings from people. This article makes you really think about living everyday to the fullest and not taking anything for advantage, because it can be gone any second. What do you guys think?

  1. I think this woman is doing a great thing. I think that everyone has basic rights, and along with the right to life I think there should also be the right to death. It is unethical for another human being to decide when or when not to end a person's suffering. I think that all the states should allow the option of assisted suicide, because the patient knows the capacity of how much they can endure. Obviously, it should be a long and deeply-considered decision, but I believe ultimately this will end a lot of unnecessary pain.

  2. I agree with Annika that only the patient can know how much they are willing to handle and that they shouldn’t take such a decision lightly. I myself believe that this option should only be available to those who are terminally ill like her and have no way of making their lives better. It would be fair, I think, to have this option available to people in similar situations in all states. It is not right to force someone who only has a short time to live to endure whatever pain might come along with the rest of their time.

  3. This is a hard topic to go through but looking at the options I would say that the pacient should decide. My Uncle had cancer and he went through so much and I understand that maybe death can be better then dieing slowly and painfully.

  4. I think that physician assisted suicide is perfectly acceptable. A person should be able to decide what she wants to do with her own life. I think some people might get confused, though - just because she decides to end her life, it doesn't necessarily mean that she wants to. Perhaps she just believes it is the most logical step in her terminal journey. It is a very controversial topic, and people should be allowed to disagree with the concept of a doctor helping someone to end her life, but no one should be able to rob a person of her natural rights, which in this case would be to stop living.

  5. Physician assisted suicide might be the right choice for her because she is the one suffering, she doesn't want to continue having this cancer that is causing her pain. She may think its the only way because there is nothing that can stop the cancer.

  6. It is totally her decision to choose the option of assisted suicide or not. Although some may argue that it is selfish that she would choose take her life, it is equally (or even more) selfish to make her suffer even more than she already is. It's true that she has her own free will and she should have control over every aspect of it.

  7. I also believe that it is her choice to relinquish her own life if she so chooses. I also think that Physician assisted suicide should be permitted in every other state however, the patient wishing for the ending of their life must be carefully examined by a medical professional to make sure they are terminally ill, and not in a weak state of mind, therefore thinking irrationally. This way, mentally unstable patients have an opportunity to get help.

  9. I also agree with max because we never know when will it be our last day to live. Everyday we should be thankful of life. Everyone should live their life to the fullest. Also it was her opinion to die she probably had lots of pain and wasn't happy with her life. We also have to think about her and her pain i know its painful to let people go but if she decided that, than its up to her.

  10. Physician assisted suicide should 100% be legalized. In my opinion, it is unacceptable that it has not been legalized in more states in the U.S. A person is entitled to their own life choices, and if someone is suffering from a terminal illness, they should have every right to end their suffering. If someone knows that the life ahead of them is going to be filled with suffering from an uncontrollable sickness, they should have the choice in when they want to die. Maynard already has the drug in possession, but she is waiting for the right time to end her life; it is her decision. I totally agree with Cherie when she states that it would be "equally (or even more) selfish to make her suffer even more than she already is..." because Maynard should be in control of her life, and she knows what is best for her suffering.

  11. In many accounts, physician assisted suicide should be legalized. Many people are suffering from gruesome diseases and infections, so people should have the right to make decisions on whether they want to end their suffering or not. US citizens are supposed to have freedom of speech, so they should have the right to decide. In Amanda's case, she is suffering from seizures and her brain is slowly breaking down. She did not have very long to live; so by taking the drug, she will die peacefully instead of dying in pain. If she wants to end her pain, she has every right to do so.

  12. I agree with many of the people above. People should not be forced to endure the horrible suffering that they will have to face if they continue living with a terminal disease. People should have the right to decide how they want to live their lives, and if they rationally decide that they want to end their pain, then I personally believe that they should have the right to do so.

  13. Through learning about Brittney's story and her cancer, I believe that every one in every state (and part of the world, if possible) should be allowed the right to 'Die With Dignity.' Everyone should be entitled to when and where to end their life if their situation of living is a constant painful struggle due to things like a terminal disease. It should be a right that everyone should be entitled to under specific requirements and allow patients of many conditions the freedom to live how they choose to live up to their very last breath. A person knows when to put their suffering to an end, and enough is enough to their struggle, others just need to realize that support them every step and every second of the way.

  14. I feel that people should have a right to choose when they want to pass. It is our very own self that has the right to choose when to pass and when not to. This story about Brittany Maynard is very sad but does bring up the concept of how the term assisted suicide works and how it should work. The fact that it is illegal in some states is very dissapointing as it brings patients feeling more and more pain day by day. She had to move from one state to another that allowed assisted suicide to make it where she can die on a said date.

  15. I think that because people do have the natural right to life, they also have a right to choose the way they would like to pass. Just to take on account that because Brittany Maynard had this horrible cancer, she chose not to suffer for the rest of her life - I'm not saying she chose to die. Physician assisted suicide should be legal to help end patients from their constant suffering if they chose that they can no longer go on.

  16. There is no need for physician-assisted suicide because it is already easy enough to kill yourself. There is no need to spend money on some drug or poison that will "humanely" kill you when it is easy enough to pull a trigger or swallow a handful of pills.

  17. I believe that people should be able to have the choice to choose to end their life if they know they will reach a level of suffering. In America, I don't believe it is right that they have not made physician assisted suicide legal. I do not agree with Gavin because I believe that people should get the respect they deserve. Choosing to die with dignity and killing yourself without the support is very different than killing yourself just because you can. Though I see Gavin's point, I do not think that shooting yourself or over dosing on pills is the same as dying peacefully.

  18. I believe people have the right to die. no one should be told what to do with their lives and if you are constantly living in pain you should not be forced to suffer. Physician assisted suicide should be legalized because it helps many, like Brittany, to end their life in peace around those they love. It is very unfair for us to make someone suffer from their disease if they don't want to. Some people against assisted suicide don't understand that these patients want to end their painful suffering, they don't want to just die because they are depressed or had a bad day. I am glad Brittany was fortunate enough to die the way she wished because many terminally ill don't get the opportunity she did.
