Kobe Bryant and Teammates Wear 'I Can't Breathe' Shirts Before Lakers-Kings

A few NBA players took the initiative and wore a shirt saying " I cant breathe". These were the last words of Eric Garner, the man who was choked to death. The death of Eric Garner has struck a lot of controversy, because the officer who choked pleaded innocent. A question I have for everyone though is: Is this incident blown out of proportion because a white man is killing a black man? Would this topic be controversial if a black officer killed a white man? Is this more of a race problem or is it more of an officer abusing his powers?

  1. This is primarily a humans rights and officer corruption issue. Race may and does play a part in several cases especially in the South where racism is still very alive and is shown by how officers racially profile and are brutal. The issue isn't necessarily blown out of proportion because it was white on black, but there are instances where it is the other way around and/or it may not at all have to be involved with racism. The real issue at hand is making sure the police are not corrupt and abuse their power to oppress people in general.

  2. In my personal opinion, this issue is a combination of police officer corruption, race, and human rights. All of them are of equal importance, however. One of the big things that really hit home for me was the fact that more police officers are abusing their powers like this, but then again, with the advent of the internet, these actions can be seen a lot more. There should be some form of regulation for these officers, and the government should be cracking down on these corrupt officers, because if this problem isn't dealt with, it could keep spreading and more of these events could be commonplace.

  3. In my opinion, this is an issue of police abuse, rather than race. I do believe that if this was a black police officer with a white criminal, people would not be this upset. Police brutality is a major issue in society, but I think people need to start focusing on that rather than believing it is an issue of racism. I personally believe that whether this criminal was white or black this police officer would have been abusive, and even though it is horrible we need to consider that this police officer puts their life on the line everyday for society. What happened is wrong, but it needs to be put into context. I think it is exaggerated a little more than necessary.

  4. Personally I believe, racist or not, the officer that choked Eric Garner to death is guilty. The officer could have approached this situation differently. The Officer was obviously over aggressive in this situation, and those actions led a death that shouldn't have occurred in the first place. I don't think this situation was a race issue, I believe this issue was more of an officer being abusive. I do however believe that there are some cases where police officers provoke problems with people of color, like the Sandra Bland case, but in this situation I personally don't think this situation happened because he was an African American man. Personally I believe that if this situation was reversed, I don't think it would get as much publicity.
