Republicans seize Senate, gaining full control of Congress

http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/04/politics/election-day-story/index.html
The GOP, or the Grand Old Party, won the over the senate this year. The GOP is better known as the Republican Party which is one of the two major political parties in America today. Being the majority in the Senate is a good thing for the republicans. The senate is able to do many things which includes opposing/rejecting proposed treaties or laws, and they also help elect federal executive officials. Many republicans openly contested Obama's recent health care plan but were unsuccessful on rejecting this plan because they were the minority in the Senate. Now that the republicans have control of the Senate they have the power to reject any of Obama's bills. I am not if this is a good thing or not. Certainly having the upperhand in the Senate helps the republicans try to make America the way they want it. It may also help improve America overall; because now there will be two different point of views trying to push their points across, and thus, giving us all the best we can get from them.Do you think that the GOP deserved to win? How will this impact the US?

  1. Having a president of one party and a Senate of the opposite party results in a lot of vetoes and disagreement, sometimes just for party policy or rivalry. During these governments, not much legislation gets passed and there are heated debates about compromises and how much each party should work with the other side. I think this very much applies to today's government, with a Democratic president and a Republican Senate.

  2. This could result in a different amount of ways. I believe it could have a lot of vetoes as there's a Senate of the opposing party, which could just be because of the party or rivals and what not. I believe this applies to how our government today, as we have a Democratic president and a Republican Senate.

  3. I can't really say who "deserved" to win because this decision was done by popular vote. Like Alton and Jacob stated, the different views of the President and Senate could cause some unrest - although I do agree that different points of views should be addressed, in government, it often can bring conflict such as a lack of progression. Nothing can really get accomplished if the two constantly disagree with each other.

  4. Now the Republicans won fair and square, but what I am mostly worried about is how will that affect this country. Will the other political party see this as a "threat"? Could another civil war break out? I feel with most of the country being ran by republicans will make some problems for the next presidential election, as well as the progress of this nation.

  5. Unless the the polls of votes were tampered with, the Republicans now have the right to this power that could supposedly change the United States. Whether this power is going to be used to the public's liking is to be determined. Considering the future, it is now possible that we could be seeing more activities regarding Republican power. I say that the best way to understand this scenario is to let it play out.

  6. I agree with Joy that the decision was done by popular vote, but does this mean that most of the citizens now have voted for Republicans for the senate? Have people seen that the country needed a change of views because the way the Democrats are running it? Or do we just blow it off and think that individuals just wanted to vote Republican this time around? I do think that this may cause some conflict with President Obama because they have opposing beliefs, but it may also help because the citizens voted for them to represent the government, meaning that they somewhat represent what the citizens want.

  7. With such polarized sides, Republicans taking up a majority of the congress will make things move faster since there are less democrats to slow them down. Having a Democrat president does not help, though. There will obviously be increased tensions and vetoes now between congress and the president since the ideals of each party are so polarized against each other.

  8. I would have to agree with what most people are saying, that the republican party did in fact deserve to win. I believe this because they obviously didn't cheat to win, we the people voted them in and if the majority of us voted for the republican party (which we did) then they deserve to have control of the senate. I think this could have a big impact on America because the democrats haven't been the minority in senate in a while so I think some problems could arise when one of Obama's new policies gets rejected by the senate.

  9. This can result in a lot of different ways and it was all done by popularity votes. They won fairly and the democrats have been minority so its going to cause some problems when Obama a gets denied for a new policy.

  10. If they won the vote they deserve to win, no one bribed people to vote for them after all. Obama has had an unpopular streak, and so perhaps Congress will feel that some balance has been restored now that they're overpowering it. Hopefully this will cause less conflicts, and now that they have won they will work to find compromises with Obama and not have to argue so much and do nothing, which resulted in the government shut-down before . Hopefully this will have a good impact on America, but also hopefully it will not make us lose progress that the democrats have had.

  11. Although I do lean towards democratic beliefs more, I do not neccesarily believe that Republicans gaining power is a bad thing. It can be a good thing if they can work together with Democrats to make America overall a better country in terms of economic, social, and legislative issues. There is a stigma that if you are of one party you must disagree with the other and bash on the others' opinions, but for progress, complying is a must..

  12. Personally, I feel I am more democratic than republican. My parents were always more democratic; therefore, I got it from them. The Republicans did gain more power in the senate, but this is a democracy. The Republicans will pass what they believe is right for the people and if what they believe is right is not what the majority believes is right it will be fixed. We should not worry that one political party is going to have too much power because the power will always shift. It will never stay in one place.

  13. I believe that the republicans gaining power in the senate was completely fair. They were voted for and ultimately deserved to win. I think that this is a good thing because many people have disagreed with some decisions Obama has recently made, so it may be a good thing to have the republicans in the senate to have some power to check these decisions. It is important that we do not have a leader with too much power, so it is good we have the constitution that sets up the government this way so the people have a say.
