In california Law-abiding Californians may not need to justify their need to carry concealed weapons, after the same three-judge panel that struck down restrictions on the permits earlier this year ruled Wednesday that it is too late for new opponents to join the fight against the ruling. The decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals would bar other law enforcement officials, including state Attorney General Kamala Harris, from gaining "intervener status" to join in further challenges of its ruling in a case originally brought by an independent journalist who sued the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department over its policy of requiring a specific reason for being allowed to carry a concealed weapon in public. Do you think its right for them to do this why or why not?

  1. People should give reasons for why they have concealed weapons in public. It doesn't matter if they think it's their right. The government has a few restrictive laws here and there to provide the public general safety. Thus, if people do happen to own weapons and bring them around in public, they should at least have a good reason. Some say they need weapons for protection. From what? People with more weapons? Overall, to carry anything with the potential to harm should be used with care and only in the most desperate of situations - aka there must be a valid reason.

  2. I agree with what Joy stated. I think that it is completely right for them have the rule of not allowing one to carry a gun in public without a sufficient reason. The bigger picture is that the government is mainly concerned with the public's safety, and by allowing everyone to carry a gun openly in public I think it will greatly endanger ones safety. Like Joy stated. What do they need protection from? People with more weapons?

  3. I think that this issue extends outside of just California: debates on gun legislation have gone on for a long time across the entire nation. The right to bear arms is guaranteed by the 2nd amendment to the Constitution, so it is unconstitutional for a state to override this federal right. If we want to change gun laws, we have to amend the Constitution.

  4. I think that carrying a gun in public is not safe for the person and the people around. I think they should not let people carry guns unless it very necessary other than that I think guns in general are just not safe and the government should worry about the environments safety.

  5. I don't think this is right. How long will it take for people to learn from shooting-related deaths to learn ? I think people need to get above their pride and think about what's more important- their safety. However, Alton is correct, we can't do anything till we amend the Constitution. We should get on that.

  6. I agree with Annika. People's safety must be the first priority. However, if we want to ensure that, there has to be some revision done to the constitution. Other than that, there will be more controversy going on based on different perspectives that people have on this issue.

  7. I think that after so many incidents of shooting all around the country should indicate what the right answer is. Carrying guns in public is equivalent to carrying a butcher knife around public. Is that justified in society? People's safety should be first priority like Hossein stated. Gun really aren't necessary in modern day society, and people need to get over it. They are dangerous and aren't necessarily beneficial to have with you at all times.

  8. I agree with the idea of stricter regulations on concealed carry of firearms. Safety should be taken extremely seriously, as previously stated, and I do not believe that having people hide firearms on their person with minimal regulations will do anything in order to keep people safe.

  9. I see why people say that it is unsafe for people if someone in your community to have a concealed weapon with no reason. However, it is their right to have one if they want to. There are already laws that make it harder to buy a weapon, so the people that actually are permitted to buy those weapons have probably used them and does not make them dangerous. What we really need to regulate is the selling of weapons in the black market where criminals get their weapons and are actually dangerous.

  10. It seems that this issue goes beyond California and is bigger than just whether or not people should have a reason to concealed carry weapons. It definitely extends to the 2nd amendment and is really about public safety. Though more restrictions on guns may seem effective at first, it is likely that people will just find ways to get around it. Otherwise, it wouldn't be such a controversial debate.

  11. I don't see the point of someone having to carry a concealed weapon around especially California. Then again, it is our right to have a concealed weapon and if you feel comfortable carrying a gun around then fine as long as you have a permit for it. Gun laws are strict as it is so i don't see why they would be adding more laws on top of it since we already require background checks. Besides, criminals dont just walk into stores and buy guns, they have other ways to get a hold of guns and weapons.
